Paul Murphy Crowned as Apps4Bens Winner!
Irishman Paul Murphy quit his job four weeks ago to dedicate himself to the Apps4Bens competition. The contest was the final event of DCWeek and a partnership between Ben’s, iStrategyLabs, Applicist and Disruptathon. Apps4Bens was launched in March to find the most innovative app for Ben’s Chili Bowl. The winning developer also enjoys the notoriety, a party for 20-30 friends at Ben’s and their picture placed on Ben’s wall- next to Bill Cosby and President Obama.
Paul’s gamble paid off. Of the four finalist that presented to a packed room at Bens Next Door, 15 celebrity guest judges, using the Disruptathon iPods and innovation discovery platform, rated Paul’s app the highest in a very close competition. The app has a “You’re Up” feature which allows anyone with an iPhone to use the app to take their picture while at Ben’s. The photo’s are then uploaded for others using the app to see. The user photo’s also post to a website opening up the possibility of having a screen on Ben’s wall showing the rotating selection of customer photo’s. The app also includes a map, history of bens, detailed menu and link to Ben’s website.
The other finalists were Svi Band, Ben Hands and Vivan Aranha. Each of them presented several creative features including mobile ordering and payment, gaming and close integration with social networks such as FourSquare, Facebook and Twitter.
In the end, however, Paul’s enthusiasm and “You’re Up!” feature won out. Congrats Paul!
